Prepare your Lawn for Spring

Dave Petti

Spring will be here before we know it! Here are 4 simple tips to get your lawn ready for Spring. Just doing these few steps will lead you in the right direction for a nice healthy lawn all summer.

  1. Sharpen Mower Blades- Sharp mower blades keep your lawn green! When you cut with dull mower blades the grass blade is shredded leaving fringes at the tip of the grass blade. After a couple days these tips dry out and turn brown leaving your lawn with a dull green color. Also remember to only remove 1/3 of the grass blade per mowing to avoid stressing the turf.
  2. Clear lawn of debris and disease– Winter can leave behind a mess, and a common disease we often see called Snow mold. Snow mold is a fungus that develops due to long periods of moisture caused from melting snow. This is a fairly common problem we see once spring hits, especially on sloped areas and certain grass varieties. It may look like your lawn is severely damaged, but it is typically an easy fix. A light raking of the affected areas will allow air flow to circulate, most of the time this is all that is needed to correct the problem.
  3. Seed bare spots– Spring is a good time to repair any bare spots in the lawn from snow plow damage or bare spots that were not fixed in the fall. We recommend doing any major seeding in the fall, when weed competition is low and root development is high. Thin areas of the lawn will fill in naturally with a good balanced fertilization program.
  4. Apply Fertilizer– An Early Spring feeding of fertilizer with crabgrass preventer will help jump start your lawn for the summer months ahead. Crabgrass that had died off with the first hard frost last season dropped hundreds of seeds per plant and is waiting for the opportunity to rear its ugly head in your lawn. Crabgrass will start to germinate once the soil temperatures start to rise above 57 degrees so it’s important to get this application down sooner rather than later.

Following these simple steps will help get your lawn looking good for the long summer months ahead. This is your year to have the best lawn on the street.
