Winners of the Turf Pride Lawn Contest

As it turns out, having the best-looking grass on the block might also put a little green back in your pocket if you’re a customer of ours at Turf Pride Lawn Care in Mentor, Ohio.

Inspired by a landscape company in Michigan that hosted a similar competition, we put on a Lawn Contest in hopes of rewarding customers who had maintained beautiful looking lawns. 

The contest covered all of our service routes through Lake, Geauga, and parts of Cuyahoga Counties. 

“These homeowners are proud of their lawns, and giving them that award makes them even prouder for all the hard work they put into it,” says Dave Petti, owner of Turf Pride Lawn Care. “Keeping a nice lawn really does increase the overall home’s value.”  

For each route, our lawn specialists picked five properties that had the most beautiful looking lawns. 

From there, we chose one winner from each route and gave $50 off any of our add-on services. 

Determining the Winners of the Turf Pride Lawn Contest

To pick which of our customers had the most beautiful looking lawns, our team considered several factors. 

“We took into consideration the proper mowing height and watering practices that contributed to the quality of the lawn, and we also looked at the landscaping and flowers throughout the property,” Petti says. 

In other words, think lush, green grass, abundant flower beds, and healthy trees and shrubs.

While this was the first year we put on the contest, we plan to run it again in coming years.

Lawn Care Tips

Let’s take a look at a few of the ways you can improve your lawn. 

Water Appropriately

A living organism, your grass needs water to survive, especially during the summer months when heat waves and drought hit Northeast Ohio. 

Take care to water your lawn about 2 inches per week, and keep an eye on the weather to adjust your schedule accordingly. 

Practice Proper Mowing

Mowing the grass seems easy enough, but believe it or not, there’s a right way to do so if you want your grass to be lush and vibrant. 

First off, set your mower deck height to higher than 3.5 inches. Cutting at this height helps the grass roots maintain a deeper hold in the soil and enables the grass to hold more water. 

Next, be sure to mow frequently enough that you’re not lobbing off huge chunks of the grass blade each time. Doing so stresses out the plant, meaning that it could be more susceptible to insects, diseases, and weeds. 

Finally, you might want to also consider mulching your grass clippings, rather than bagging them. While some people prefer to bag them for aesthetic reasons, the practice of mulching clippings helps valuable nutrients return to the soil. 

Fertilize

While spring fertilization promotes new growth for the upcoming season, fall fertilization helps the turf store energy in its root system over winter.
