Grateful Embrace: Turf Pride Donates Services to Local Cemetery

Dave Petti

This year for Veterans Day, the Turf Pride Team decided to give thanks to the men and women who have served our country by participating in a volunteer service project at Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.

“To give back to veterans and those who have sacrificed their lives for our country is very meaningful,” says Dave Petti, owner of Turf Pride. “We love to do it.”

Taking place on Saturday, Nov. 8 in tandem with a similar event at the Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio, the day of service was put on by the Ohio Lawn Care Association.

Turf Pride teamed up with other lawn care companies around the area to fertilize the 160 acres within the cemetery.

“It’s a beautiful property, and we’re just adding to the beauty of it,” Petti says.

This is not the first time Turf Pride has participated in such an event.

“We did a similar event at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C., several years ago, and we found that this was something we could do right in our area,” Petti says.

Petti adds that Turf Pride’s crew members look forward to taking part in the day each year.

“Our guys volunteer for it, so it’s great to see that they care and want to take part in something like this,” Petti says.

Most of the supplies for the day such as fertilizer were provided by industry suppliers–their own way of giving back to the community.

Why Fall Fertilization is Important

This service project lined up nicely with the ideal window for fall fertilization, so let’s take a look at why fertilizing in the fall is so important to establish healthy grass–whether it’s in a cemetery or your backyard.

A healthy lawn starts with the roots. They are the building block to a lush, full yard.

While it may seem like your lawn needs less attention as it prepares for dormancy in wintertime, it actually needs a little TLC to help fortify its root system ahead of winter.

Fertilizing in the fall provides a little extra something for the roots to feed on during some of the harsher winter months in Northeast Ohio, and it provides the extra boost your grass needs to grow come spring.

Plus, by establishing a strong root system, your grass will be better equipped to fight off potential issues in the spring, like pests, diseases, weeds, as well as drought conditions in the summer.

All in all, a thicker root system usually means fewer bare spots and weeds. And who doesn’t love a thick, lush lawn?

At Turf Pride, we use an organic-based granular fertilizer to help ensure the safety of your loved ones as well.

Our most basic lawn care program includes six strategically timed visits from spring through fall to address your lawn's fertilization and weed control. Our next tier also includes winterization and core aeration, and our premium option adds overseeding to the mix.
