How to keep Crabgrass out of your lawn.

Dave Petti

Just the mention of the name “Crabgrass” aka Digitaria sanguinalis aka public enemy number 1 sends shivers down the spine of anyone who loves their lawn.  So what steps can you take to keep this annual weed from taking hold in your lawn this year?

Stop it before it starts: As Benjamin Frankin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  This is very true when it comes to stopping crabgrass.  At Turf Pride Lawn Care, we apply preemergent early spring that forms a barrier in the soil

Mow high: Crabgrass needs plenty of sunshine to germinate, and keeping a taller lawn will help shade the soil keeping seeds from germinating.

Post control: While prevention is the best measure, there are many seasons that Mother Nature wears down our efforts to prevent crabgrass.  In this case there are products that we use at Turf Pride that can kill the crabgrass that has emerged, this may take multiple treatments depending on the stage of the grassy weeds.
